WORK SCHEDULE:

Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., 20-25 hours per week.

Position requires an employee to work between 20-25 hours per week during the school semesters, and 40 hours per week during summer, not to exceed 1,500 hours in a calendar year. Each semester, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and graduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.

INTERN GUIDELINES:

Must be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program. A student’s intern position will end within three months after graduation.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the direction of the Manager - SpringNet Engineering and Operations or designee, performs engineering duties necessary for the completion of the department’s goals. Duties will be dependent upon the individual job classification and departmental workload and may include any or all the duties described below.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs general engineering functions in the design and operation of fiber optic system.

  2. Designs line extensions to provide communication service to new large-scale commercial and industrial customers. Performs surveying of electric line poles, aerial cabling, and underground facilities.

  3. Redesigns existing communication facilities for commercial and industrial customers due to system capacity and changes, building additions, or other construction activities.

  4. Performs engineering design of reinforcement and preventative maintenance projects.

  5. Performs engineering design and layout of fiber optic facility adjustments as required for highway improvement projects, sewer projects, and other municipal improvement projects.

  6. Interfaces with outside agencies at all levels as required. Obtains construction permits from appropriate agencies.

  7. Reviews, updates, and prepares fiber optic construction standards. Prepares job sketches, drawings, material lists, cost estimates, and construction labor estimates as required.

  8. Analyzes various new materials and processes and works with vendors and equipment suppliers as required. Stays current on fiber optic technology.

  9. Performs fiber optic splicing designs. Maintains fiber optic splicing records. Creates and updates fiber optic system schematics.

  10. Reviews electric plans as part of City Plan Review process to ensure compliance including compliance with the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code.

  11. Prepares contracts for bidding purposes as required to secure contractors to perform work on the fiber optic system such as line construction, maintenance, and emergency rebuilds.

  12. Designs work referenced above is subject to the approval of a Registered Professional Engineer to assure compliance with federal, state, or local requirements.

  13. Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a school with a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. No previous engineering experience is required. Basic knowledge of AutoCAD preferred.

Licensing/Certification:

Must have a valid driver’s license (minimum Class F).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of engineering functions and problem-solving techniques.

  • Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, and coordinate technical work.

  • Understand the problems and practices applicable to the functions of engineering.

  • Complete assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Communicate thoughts and ideas verbally and in writing.

  • Complete basic computer functions with a familiarity in Microsoft Word.

  • Effectively handle numerous assignments simultaneously and accurately.

Physical Requirements:

Typically, sedentary work. Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communication. Substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and close visual acuity to operate a computer is required. Must be able to bend, stoop, and walk long distances over uneven terrain to survey electric line facilities.

Working Conditions:

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment with some outside fieldwork in all weather conditions.

Miscellaneous Requirements:

  • New hires are informed of the requirements of the Internship Program upon hire, and incumbents must continue to meet the requirements each semester in order to continue employment. Interns who do not meet the requirements may be ineligible for the Internship Program and their employment may be terminated.

  • Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.

  • Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
