Position Summary
RSI is recruiting for a AS&T Intern who willassist the AS&T (Applied Studies and Technology) group of the DOE OfficeofLegacy Management(DOE LM)Legacy Management Support (LMS) Contractor team by performing a variety of support activities on its Erosion Risk Project. The work will be done as part of the DOE LM Educational Collaboration initiative. Outcomes of this work willsupport AS&T’s development of refined design criteria through experimental determination of optimal methods for constructing and repairing disposal cell cover systems at DOE LMsites to ensure long term erosion protection.

This position is required to travel 0-10% of the time.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
On an ongoing basis, collaborate with AS&T erosion Subject Matter Experts in acquiring and generating data to support the mission and objectives of AS&T’s Erosion Risk Project.
Support AS&T personnel in researching, identifying, and verifying available sources of earthen materials critically needed for building various prototype cover systems to be investigated in hydraulic flume studies at Colorado State University (CSU) to assess their erosional resilience under extreme flow conditions. Tools used to identify potential sources of materials may include directed internet searches, consultation of USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Soil Survey maps, Google Earth, phone inquiries, or other similar tools.
Lead in the development of a comprehensive matrix of information on viable soil borrow sources and commercial quarried stone materials, rounded to subrounded river run cobbles and gravels and gravel/sand processing operations and the characteristics and availability of specific materials at each source. Coordinate with AS&T staff and testing laboratories to identify parameters and test methods for testing soil materials to verify key physical and chemical properties, as required.
Support AS&T personnel in the preparation and submission of samples from soil borrow sources, commercial quarries/other commercial sources of stone, and gravel/sand processing sources for submission to third party labs for testing. Support AS&T personnel in preparation of technical memos, phone correspondence logs, and plans for completing activities required as a leadup to initiating the flume testing program at CSU.
Provide assistance in overseeing startup and initial flume testing activities as required.
Participate in periodic meetings with AS&T and other LMS personnel discussing flume studies or other erosion-related matters.
Assist AS&T personnel in researching and compiling recent literature on erosional processes and erosion protection analysis methods and techniques applicable to sites in the Western U.S.
Provide other assistance to AS&T personnel on programmatic and site-specific erosion-related activities as required.

Required Education and Years of Relevant Experience
Completionof 60 credit hours prior to start of internship towards anundergraduatedegree inGeotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology,Geology, Geochemistry, or a relatedfield.

Essential Physical Requirements
Light: Work involves moving objects by exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job/occupation is rated for light work when it requires (1) a significant degree of walking or standing, (2) mostly sitting while pushing or pulling arm or leg controls, or (3) working when the weight of the materials is negligible. (The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production-rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible).
