Summary of Essential Functions

The extern is expected to work in person at the clinic on the College of Lake County’s Grayslake Campus for a minimum of 16 hours a week, with an option to conduct an additional 3.5 non-clinical hours remotely, for a total of 19.5 hours a week. Direct service hours will be provided only in person on campus. The delivery of services on campus can include intakes, individual and group therapy, with opportunity to conduct some of those hours over telehealth. All clinical work will be temporarily recorded for the purposes of supervision using technology and equipment provided by CAPS . The extern can anticipate completing on average a minimum of 8 clinical hours a week and a maximum of 9-10, depending on level of readiness, and as agreed upon with the Training Coordinator.

Supervision is approached from a developmental-mentoring perspective, where focus goes to progressively supporting the extern in developing their clinical, therapeutic skills. Should the extern have the skills to deliver services in fluent Spanish, supervision can match the language of the service, provided by a bilingual staff psychologist. In addition to 2 hours of individual supervision, the extern will participate of the weekly Case Conference with the entire clinical staff (group supervision). Clinician’s use this hour to consult on their cases, as needed, to address clinical and ethical issues. The input from the extern is valued in this meeting. The extern can anticipate completing 2-3 case presentations over the course of the 10 month experience during the Case Conference rotation of clinicians. Overall, the extern should expect to receive supervision that will enhance their use of evidence based treatments that respond to clients’ needs.

In addition to direct service hours and supervision, the extern will have 3.5 hours available for documentation, as well as an hour for preparing for their supervision hours, a biweekly seminar and/or professional development hour, and if interested, can have a biweekly rotation with the Outreach Coordinator. The Outreach rotation can expose the extern to one of the areas typically central to college counseling centers in the United States. Through this rotation, the extern can anticipate learning and collaborating in the planning, preparation and delivery of outreach events on campus in all of its forms.
