We have an exciting opportunity for a Planetary Exploration Intern to join the team!

This is a temporary role not to exceed 14 weeks.

The Science Integration team seeks a Planetary Exploration Intern to work at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. The intern will work on research and development concepts related to human-robotic interactions in planetary analog environments. This temporary position is only offered in person and onsite.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in development of cognitive models to support traverse planning decisions by human-robotic interactions

  • Assist in development of operations tasks and human subject evaluations

  • Assist in development of user interface concepts in collaboration with software developers on human-robot interactions

  • Assist science team in development of legged autonomous planetary surface exploration

  • Participate in human-robot testing at JSC labs and possibly in field locations

  • Collaborate with aerospace professionals and other interns in lab spaces such as: Field Equipment for Exploration Training (FEET) Lab, Advanced Concepts for Exploration (ACE) Lab, Simulant Development Lab (SDL), etc.

Requisition Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled at an accredited university.

  • Completed at least 45 credit hours.

  • Minimum of 2.8 GPA.

Requisition Preferences:

  • MS/PhD student in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, or a closely related field

  • Programming skills

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills

  • Machine learning research experience

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.

Other Essential Functions

Professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
