We are looking for a Summer 2025 Software Engineer Intern - Artificial Intelligence to further an Amentum Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning project on the JETS II Contract. Amentum has identified developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents to tackle individual's big pain points to drive business results. We have developed a prototype AI agent which takes natural language inputs and creates safety support documents with minimal interaction.
The AI Agent is an on-device LLM chatbot modeled after ChatGPT using the Gemma framework. It operates entirely offline ensuring privacy and security for NASA documents with the FAISS library for storing results and StreamLit UI. The result is a Retrieval Augmented Generation application.
The Intern will expand and extend the AI Agent that was developed by exploring alternate LLMs and expand the input options.
We are actively searching for qualified candidates for this potential opening; however, we do not have assurance at this time when the position will be finalized and opened. Because we have strong reason to believe the position will be approved soon, we are proceeding with identifying qualified candidates and conducting interviews.
This is a temporary role not to exceed 13 weeks.
If selected, you will:
Enhance the domain knowledge to enable more insightful and accurate responses and develop features for creating detailed reports and PowerPoint slides based on user inputs.
Expand input options to include images, audio, and video for a more versatile user experience.
Improve performance of the AI agent using tuning.
Additional tasks could include:
Create a CI/CD workflow to ensure that continuous updates of LLMs by the vendor will not cause AI Agent to break
Making the AI Agent compatible with ServiceNow Workflows
Report to project lead or project manager for technical guidance, support, task assignment, and processes.
Prepare status reports as required.
Interact with other NASA and JETS teams and departments.
Perform job functions based on pre-established guidelines or instructions.
Perform other tasks as required.
Requisition Qualifications:
Currently enrolled at an accredited university.
Completed at least 45 credit hours.
Minimum of 2.8 GPA.
Interest in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
Familiarity with Python, Linux, PyTorch, HTML and JavaScript
Self-motivated, team player and adaptability to a dynamic environment and the ability to complete all assignments as required.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and schedules with limited supervision.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
Proficiency with team collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams or WebEx
Requisition Preferences:
College Junior or Senior working towards a BS in Computer Science or equivalent from an accredited university
Courses in Data Structures, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science
Interest in NASA or Space flight
Experience utilizing Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning either in college coursework or work experience.

Work Environment
Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
Physical Requirements
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
