Job Responsibilities

The Director of Internships administers and develops the Universitys internship program as part of a comprehensive effort to prepare students for post-graduate career placement and success. Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Director enhances, facilitates, and promotes meaningful internships and enriching career-related experiences for Trumans students. The Director collaborates with students, faculty, employers, alumni and other stakeholders to create and sustain a robust and diverse range of internship programs and external partnerships that support the University-wide mission and the career development of our students.

It is anticipated that the Universitys internship portfolio will include opportunities in several major metropolitan areas beyond Trumans Kirksville campus and will require the identification of a full suite of student support services including housing, transit and health and wellness. The Director is expected to maintain and develop external placement opportunities and resources associated with each ecosystem, as well as work collaboratively with a range of academic support units to refine and manage the internship process.This is a full-time, exempt, benefits-eligible, on-site position that will require periodic work-related travel.

  • Cultivate industry, organization, and government partnerships that connect students with relevant internship opportunities that align with their academic and professional goals.
  • Collect data from students, faculty, and employers to assess the effectiveness of the internship program and related external partnerships.
  • Prepare and present regular reports to university leadership that highlight program outcomes, trends, and opportunities.
  • Coordinate with university advancement and academic unit heads to build and maintain strong relationships with industry partners, companies, state, federal, and municipal agencies, alumni, and other organizations and to develop a robust network of internship opportunities.
  • Work closely with the University career center which prepares students for the internship application process, including resume and cover letter reviews, interview coaching, and professional etiquette guidance.
  • Collaborate with various faculty, academic departments, industry, organization, and government partners and employers to ensure the academic program and its associated learning outcomes are aligned with the successful placement and development of interns.
  • Ensure compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding of assets, compliance with university policies and procedures, reliability of internal and external reporting, and effectiveness of operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in a relevant field.
  • Relevant work experience - typically two to three years in higher education, career services, human resources, recruiting, or professional development.
  • Current knowledge of recruiting trends, industry characteristics, job specifications and requirements, and industry/employer culture.
  • Strong network and relationship-building skills to engage with employers and secure internship opportunities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively guide and advise students and engage with a broad range of external stakeholders that may include state and federal agencies.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, employers, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in higher education administration; additional relevant education, certifications, and/or work experience may be considered.
