LAYTON CITY Part-Time Museum Collections Intern in LAYTON, Utah

GENERAL PURPOSE

 

Performs a variety of general administrative duties as needed to organize, catalog and review artifacts and other historical items, and digitize the Museum's collection through updating computer records and photographing objects in the collection as well as scanning the photographic and archival collections.

Works under the general supervision of the Museum Curator.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Promotes and follows the City's mission statement, values and expectations.

 

Conducts research of the historical identification and interpretation of museum artifacts, photographs and other items with historical significance; inventories the artifact collection, photographs museum objects, scans archival material, scans the photographic collection and updates museum database records for the artifacts.

 

Documents and maintains progress of research projects in work journal.

 

Performs additional tasks related to the Museum Collections Digitization RAMP Project and other related duties as required.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

1.         Education and Experience:

 

            A.      Concurrent enrollment or recent graduation from a degree program in museum studies, art history, public history, history, anthropology, archaeology or related field;

 

2.         Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Basic knowledge of museum best practices in collections management and preventative conservation methods.

 

Working knowledge of the operation of personal computers and various software applications including spreadsheets, word processing, Adobe Photoshop, etc.

 

Familiarity with collection management database systems; knowledge of Past Perfect preferred.

 

General experience with technology including scanners and cameras.

 

Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

 

Considerable ability to work independently

4.         Work Environment:

 

Incumbent of the position generally performs in climate-controlled environment. Tasks require variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain (up to 50 lbs), related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Communicating, i.e., talking, hearing and seeing essential to job effectiveness. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Periodic travel required in normal course of job performance.
