The Kinetic Group Machine Shop Intern in Lewiston, Idaho

Job Description

Vista Outdoor is looking to add a Machine Shop Intern. This position supports the manufacturing facility by supplying high performance tooling and/or machine parts. Builds, repairs, or modifies current machine parts, equipment, or tooling to produce high quality products. Performs various phases of operations necessary to cut or shape metal to precision dimensions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be currently enrolled in an approved College level Precision Machining Technical program or similar technical program. Must provide current transcript to be considered with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

  • Must be able to understand English.

  • Must be able to read, write, and perform advanced math calculations and be able to recognize improbable results.

  • Must have a good safety record.

  • Must have good housekeeping and organizational skills.

  • Ability to pass background checks to allow on-site possession of explosives

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Internship will concentrate on basic flow of tooling production through the Machine Shop and an introduction to the following bullet points.

  • Sets up, maintains, and operates a variety of metal-removing machines and machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, bandsaw, pedestal grinder/buffer, and belt sander.

  • Analyzes and reviews specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, work orders or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.

  • Computes dimensions, plans layout of workpiece, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations. Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.

  • Positions and secures parts on faceplate or worktable, using devices such as vises, V-blocks, and angle plates. Verifies position of workpiece. Verifies dimensions and alignment using measuring instruments such as micrometer, height gauges, and gauge blocks. Positions and secures material on machine table, using a chuck, vise, holding fixture, or mounts tool on arbor and clamps between centers.

  • Selects feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, and cutting tool for each operation. Starts machine, turns handwheel to feed tool into workpiece and/or engages automatic feeding device. Starts flow of coolant against tool and workpiece. Turns wheel to position table or spindle to obtain specified taper and bevel on edges of cutting tools. Moves controls and reads dials to set cutting tool rotation speed, feed rate, and grinding wheel rotation speed. Positions and tightens stops or cams to limit travel of workpiece or wheel.

  • Measures and verifies dimensions of workpiece to verify conformance to specifications using fixed gauges, micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, and surface gauges.

Physical Requirements: Manual dexterity for computer work and writing. Hearing, speaking, and vision are required (with or without correction).

Work is performed in a Machine Shop. The environment can be loud, dirty, and filled with machinery and heavy equipment.

Mental Requirements: Must communicate effectively in verbal and written formats. Reading comprehension and basic math skills are a requirement. Flexibility to effectively deal with a variety of people and situations and to handle interruptions and multiple tasks simultaneously. Quick thinking and problem solving to readily assimilate information. Ability to maintain tact and highly professional manners. Initiative to effectively complete tasks with little supervision. The ability to identify and appropriately handle confidential information.
