What You Will Do

The Bioscience Division is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic undergraduate intern candidate interested in performing research within the facets of mass spectrometry - especially proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists, technicians and students on a number of different projects ranging from exposure science and bio sample analysis, including method development, data acquisition, and data processing. The student will be expected to contribute to different projects as need arises. The ideal student must be meticulous in their work, self-starting, independent, and able to communicate in a professional manner. Depending on the performance of the student and funding availability, there are opportunities to extend the appointment by transitioning to other types of LANL positions or continuing education.

The student will also act as a member of the B-TEK Group by attending group meetings, and as a member of the mass spectrometry team. Responsibilities include conducting research and reporting results back to the team at weekly meetings. Furthermore, on-the-job training and opportunities will arise to craft peer-reviewed publications and assist in grant proposals. In addition, the student is encouraged to attend seminars and other LANL functions to expand their knowledge base and broaden interests. The student will also have the opportunity to participate in networking and social events.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• General background in biology, chemistry, or analytical sciences

• Demonstrated experience with mass spectrometry or instrumentation, and methods of sample preparation, quantitative/qualitative results

• Familiarity with good laboratory practices and experiment design

• Demonstrated competency with computers and software applications for word processing, data processing, and data visualization

• Ability to maintain and record work performed, data obtained, as well as write and follow detailed protocols.

• Ability to understand and present research results clearly and succinctly in both written and oral formats

• Ability to comfortably work independently and as part of a team

• Ability to manage time and see tasks to completion

Education/Experience: Currently admitted or actively enrolled in an undergraduate degree awarding institution.

Desired Qualifications:

• Demonstrated expertise in analytical science

• Broad fundamental knowledge of mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography

• Expertise in analysis of biomolecules, including proteins, lipids, and metabolites

• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Desire to report work in peer-reviewed publications and assist in the grant proposal process

• Experience with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various instrumentation or mass spectrometers including Thermo Fisher Orbitrap platforms

• Knowledge of any coding languages (e.g. C, R or Python), other statistical data processing packages, or mass spectrometry data packages

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
