Job Description
AECOM , a global leader in transportation and urban planning, is seeking a graduate student in urban planning or transportation planning for a paid internship in the company's downtown Milwaukee office.
Our planning team is housed in the AECOM transportation business line, but we also contribute to projects across other disciplines, including water resources (particularly green infrastructure planning), economic and community planning, and environmental planning. All our work is grounded in effective, meaningful, and equitable stakeholder engagement. Our team is collegial and interested in what's going on in Wisconsin and the world.
This position is a paid internship for summer 2025, scheduled for 32-40 hours per week through the end of August. The position has the potential to be extended into the school year at a number of weekly hours to be determined collaboratively based on university workload and schedule.
The position offers the opportunity for a graduate planning student to contribute to a variety of consulting projects in Wisconsin and across the country, including:
Transportation corridor planning
Transit studies
Environmental analyses for transportation design
Bicycle and pedestrian systems development
Transportation Demand Management
Community outreach
Natural resource planning
Economic development and housing studies
Land use and comprehensive planning
Policy analyses
The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Supports planning studies and reports for new and updated plans, programs and regulations.
Reviews infrastructure development proposals for conformance with best practices, plans, and regulations.
Works directly with community stakeholders and the public on engagement activities.
Prepares and presents detailed reports on transportation and development proposals to government bodies.
Collects a variety of statistical data and prepares reports and maps on topics, such as census information, land use, and transportation systems.
Supports community review of public infrastructure development projects.
Under direct supervision, conducts field evaluations and assessments.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Transportation Planning, geography, or a related field and must have completed at least three years of study. Candidates who have recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications:
Currently pursuing a master’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning or Transportation Planning
Strong written and oral communications skills
Ability to work in a collaborative team setting
Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
Basic Experience in demographic and economic analysis
Some familiarity with Geographic Information Systems
Basic understanding of urban planning principles
Willingness to learn about community outreach techniques, including to populations of color and low-income populations

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $22.00/hour - $28.00/hour.
