Microsoft Corporation Research Intern - Design Engineer in Redmond, Washington

  • Act as a liaison and fill the gaps between design and engineering.

  • Demonstrate foundational engineering fundamentals (e.g., interpreting designs, writing code, working with source control).

  • Participate in design and code reviews to ensure the quality of implementation and execution from a user experience and engineering perspective.

  • Contribute to visual designs from concept to delivery.

  • Create workflows, journey maps, user scenarios, task flows, and personas in support of interaction design software-based experiences.

  • Learn about, contribute to, and implement a broader design system, increasing its adoption and consistent usage in Microsoft Research, our product partners and companywide.

  • Design and develop prototypes demonstrating the functionality and flow of software applications and research tools.

  • Focus on end-to-end user experiences, empathizing and balancing experiences with business and technical tradeoffs.

  • Produce and validate product design specifications and production requirements.

  • Negotiate design solutions in relation to business goals.

  • Explore the cutting edge of artificial intelligence and human interaction and collaboration.

  • Present ideas, workflows and be able to guide an audience though your work.

  • Demonstrate a track record of delivering great work on time.

  • Have a passion for customers and creating designs focused on a customer’s needs.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree in Design Engineering, Visual Communication Design, Graphic Design, Interaction Design, Human-computer Interaction, Computer Science or a related field.

Other Requirements

  • Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.

  • In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. After you submit your application, a request for letters may be sent to your list of references on your behalf. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in design and productivity tools including: Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, or related.

  • A portfolio of work showing a foundation in design skills, thinking, and craftsmanship

  • Understanding of typography, layout and, graphic design

  • Possessing a discerning eye for quality and design excellence

  • Curious, with a growth mindset.

  • Ability to work with others to create innovative solutions and turn ideas into reality.

  • Experience with web and front-end development technologies such as html, CSS, JavaScript and TypeScript

  • Front end software development skill for prototyping and contributing to dev builds.

  • Knowledge of end-to-end software development lifecycle and ability to work with a team of software engineers.

Applied Sciences IC2 - The base pay range for this internship is USD $5,090 - $10,120 per month.

There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $6,690 - $11,030 per month.

Applied Sciences IC3 - The base pay range for this internship is USD $6,290 - $12,170 per month.

There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $8,060 - $13,240 per month.
