$17.51 - $23.64

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

GENERAL PURPOSE:

A pharmacy intern with a valid NYS intern permit may perform, under the supervision of a pharmacist, all of the functions of a pharmacist as delegated by law, rule, or regulation. These functions include preparing, compounding, and dispensing prescriptions and medications for patients in accordance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations for Pharmacy practice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares medication orders based on requests or recipes for pharmacist verification including obtaining correct medication and quantity, packaging medications in accordance with applicable laws, completing logs where required, utilizing safety check procedures where required such as bar code scan confirmation, and assisting the pharmacists in obtaining medications from inventory areas when needed.

  • Operates and maintains automated systems or technology

  • Stocks medication areas appropriately, including automated systems, to meet the needs of the area based on demand.

  • Rotates stock effectively, checking expiration dates to minimize waste and remove any expired medications from the area.

  • Utilizes medication delivery systems efficiently,including pneumatic tube systems and hand-delivery,

  • Utilizes effective service recovery techniques to troubleshoot and solve problems that may arise in the medication use system and communicating resolution to appropriate staff in a timely manner.

  • Triages phone calls and handles medication requests appropriately, deferring all clinical decisions to a licensed pharmacist for follow up.

  • Employs courtesy and uses constructive communication with pharmacy colleagues, customers, patients, and all hospital staff.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Successfully completed the first professional year of study in an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) program OR A graduate from a non-accredited program that has passed NAPLEX and been approved by the board office as eligible to apply for a limited (intern) permit.

  • Foreign graduates must have received a determination of equivalent training and education accepted by the NYS Board of Pharmacy.

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Attention to detail and excellent communication skills required

  • Independent judgment and decision making required

  • Ambitious about identifying patient care problems and does not pass on problems to the next shift without exhausting reasonable attempts at resolution and communicating progress required
