BAE Systems Ship Repair is seeking to hire Shipyard Management Interns at our San Diego, CA facility. This is a six-week internship targeting students currently enrolled in a maritime program requiring a short-term experience. Internships and Co-ops may be shortened or extended at the discretion of the company. Relocation assistance will be offered, but housing is not provided.

Relevant majors would include Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Maritime Affairs, and Mechanical Engineering programs at one of the following maritime academies such as but not limited to Webb Institute, California Maritime Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Texas A&M-Gavalston, Great Lakes Maritime Academy, State University of New York Maritime College and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA).

As a LEAP Shipyard Management Intern, you will:

  • Work within a diverse workforce and functional groups

  • Gain exposure to and understand the complexity of Navy Surface ships and various commercial vessels

  • Interact with team members within our company such as program management team members (ship superintendents, project managers, program managers, etc.), craft managers, craft supervisors, safety/chemist employees and other customers

  • Contribute to substantial work that will be beneficial to your academic and future professional careers

  • Assist the Programs department to manage a designated portion of a Navy surface ship repair package including the installation, modification, and repair of complex equipment and systems in Engineering, Crew Berthing, Electronic/Combat System Suites, and Mission Control spaces

  • Conduct ship checks; attend meetings; read and interpret detailed work items, drawings, and customer requirements

  • Gather and interpret data for reports and analyses. Verify source material for authenticity purposes

  • Provide support in preparing reports, documentation, and analyses to higher level department personnel

  • Obtain documentation and other data needed to help develop procedures for future projects and analyses.

  • Frequently exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat

  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places

  • The noise level in the shipyard environment is usually loud; office environment is usually low to moderate

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled at a Maritime Academy and pursuing an accredited degree in technical disciplines leading to an Undergraduate degree in the fields of Naval Architecture, Maritime Affairs, Marine Engineering, or related fields.

  • Ability to work under the direction of project teams

  • Familiarity with current, computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to develop basic technical design and developmental problem-solving skills

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective, professional relationships, and communicate effectively

  • Ability to access shipboard spaces via vertical/inclined ladders and through compartments with limited overhead and/or confined spaces

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Completed their sophomore year of study

  • Entry level knowledge of fundamental concepts of ship systems and ship construction

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $48620 - $67640

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.

Temporary employees generally are not eligible for BAE Systems benefits, but can elect to participate in the 401(k) savings plan. Temporary employees working 20 hours per week are eligible for medical benefits, the employee assistance program, and business travel accident insurance.
