DKS Associates Transportation Engineering Intern in Seattle, Washington

Transportation Engineering Intern Our interns will work closely with mid and senior-level team members on a variety of traffic engineering projects to develop plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for traffic engineering related improvements. This position will also have the opportunity to assist with multi-modal transportation analysis, performance measures, ITS planning, multi-resolution modeling, systems engineering, and a range of other relevant topics. Engineers at DKS keep up to date with current industry best practices and agency standards to develop creative solutions that balance the needs of all project stakeholders. The internship program includes regularly scheduled training sessions in a wide variety of topics including; Interns at DKS work on the same projects and in similar roles as regular full-time employees. You will be given the opportunity to attend meetings with the project team(s) for projects you are working on. * What will you be doing?*

  • Gaining experience through working on a variety of transportation engineering, planning, operations, and ITS projects
  • Growing and developing your skills in Transportation Engineering through use of transportation operations and simulation models, as well as travel demand models.
  • Opportunity to conduct traffic operations analysis, traffic impact analysis, and transportation analysis
  • Develop simulation models of alternatives to derive performance measures and provide visual demonstration.
  • Identify and develop solutions to address multimodal transportation needs
  • Gaining experience working on a variety of traffic engineering design projects under the guidance of expert team members
  • Growing and developing your skills in developing Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) for roadway lighting, permanent signing and pavement markings, traffic signals, signal interconnect/fiber optic communications, and temporary traffic control plans
  • Roadway lighting analysis and traffic operations analysis
  • Going out in the field to verify condition of existing traffic systems (Signing, Lighting, Signals, etc) and observe traffic operations
  • Providing engineering support during construction.
  • Opportunity to experience projects in transportation technology and transportation planning
  • Arterial signal coordination involving traffic signal operations and intelligent transportation systems

What are we looking for?

  • Obtained or obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation, or similar field; pursuing a Master's degree in Transportation Engineering desired
  • Coursework in Transportation and Traffic Engineering, Transportation Planning, GIS, Environmental Studies, Statistics, or Travel Demand Modeling
  • Ability to work in a team and complete tasks independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Creative problem solver with the ability to exercise critical thinking
  • Interest in traffic engineering design and/or planning
  • EIT Certification desired, but not required
  • Software experience desired, but not required: AGI lighting analysis software, AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, Synchro, Vissim
