The Executive Pathways Program is a paid summer internship (June – August) for college students to explore a rewarding career in public service.

The Office of Indian Policy Intern will learn about the implementation of MN Statute 10.65 Government-to-Government Relationship with Tribal Governments. The Office of Indian Policy Intern will take the Tribal State Relations Training, assist in the organization of, setting up and gathering materials for the Annual Department of Human Services Tribal Consultations and Annual Tribal Legislative Summit. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in tribal relations, program development, and applying policy research to real-world challenges. They are passionate about improving the health and well-being of American Indian communities and are eager to contribute to DHS's mission. This internship offers hands-on experience in policy research, program evaluation, and collaboration with tribal governments, providing valuable skills and insights into advancing equity in health and human services.
Some responsibilities include but not limited to:
Provide technical support to the Deputy Director and Director of Indian Policy to integrate American Indian health strategies into departmental planning, budgeting, and legislative initiatives
Assist in research, business planning, program development, and preparing for tribal government negotiations
Evaluate and monitor health and human services programs to reduce health disparities among American Indian populations
Support the implementation of government-to-government consultation policies and assist in planning the annual legislative summit and tribal consultations
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for an internship, you must meet the following requirements:
You must be a student at an accredited educational institution; or recently graduated December 2024 or May 2025
AND
Excellent human relation and communication skills sufficient to represent the position and Division in a professional, efficient, and clear manner
Ability to work independently and in a team setting
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and contribute to a culture of inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred majors include: Native American & Indigenous Studies, Tribal Governance & Policy, American Indian Law/Pre-law, Human Services, Public Policy
Knowledge of issues facing tribal and urban American Indian communities
Strong verbal and written communications
Analytical thinking
Quantitative and report writing
Additional Requirements
Must be in academic years of sophomore, junior, or senior (Graduate students allowed)
Must provide unofficial transcript to show proof of school enrollment
Must be willing to reside in Minnesota for the duration of internship
Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) criminal background check will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
