Job Description

A student internship is available immediately in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Strategic Energy Analysis Center in our Golden, Colorado Office. The position would be part to full-time (20 – 40 hours per week) during the academic year with the potential for long-term coverage during school breaks (e.g. winter holidays and summer). Potential candidates would also be eligible to work at NREL as an intern for up to one year after graduation.

The candidate will support a variety of tasks related to renewable energy data analysis with a focus on residential solar power generation in NREL's Strategic Energy Analysis Center. The successful candidate will have strong research, data analysis, consolidation, and writing skills as well as experience compiling and manipulating large data sets for analysis. The candidate will support renewable energy technology, policy, market, financing, and regulatory projects through data collection and analysis, literature reviews, industry interviews, writing, and spreadsheet analysis. Possible key projects include:

  • Stakeholder engagement direct with jurisdictions such as cities and counties related to residential solar permitting.

  • Support the development and expansion of SolarAPP+ across the United States.

  • Data collection, cleaning, and analysis related to solar permitting, inspection, and interconnection.

  • Support research projects examining distributed solar policies and other clean energy-related market analysis.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Experience in managing program logistics: responding to emails, filling out forms, answering procedural questions, and similar work.

  • Experience conducting research projects targeted on specific communities or organizations, potentially including presenting and receiving feedback on a report.

  • Willingness to engage in data analysis projects.

  • Great attention to detail and excellent research, written communication, organizational, and Excel and PowerPoint skills.

  • Personable, professional, and comfortable engaging with state and local stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Pursuing graduate degree in environmental studies, economics, law, public policy, public administration, political science, or business, with background in renewable energy, minerals, engineering, or other relevant field.

Expertise in data collection, organization, cleaning, and manipulation and familiar with one software tool to scrape, manage, visualize, and analyze data which could include R, MATLAB or PYTHON. An ideal candidate will have a background in qualitative and quantitative data analysis.

Knowledge and experience in one or more:

  • Residential solar adoption

  • Solar permitting, inspection, and interconnection

  • Data Analysis

  • Clean energy market and policy analysis

  • Renewable energy deployment and technology

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 - $68,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Benefits Summary

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
