Help our collaborative team support the City of Irvine!

The City of Irvine is seeking an intern to assist staff in the day-to-day activities within the Communications & Engagement Department. Students or recent graduates selected for the position perform a range of duties from very basic activities to those requiring higher skill levels and professional expertise. Applicants will have the opportunity to play a role in all areas of the department and assist with marketing and outreach to the City of Irvine community. This internship is unpaid.

Through this internship, the student or graduate will be able to understand how a government agency shares information with its residents, visitors, and businesses in order to serve all of the needs in our community. Minimum commitment of 12 - 15 hours per week for two or more months.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Your Impact:

  • Assist in the preparation and distribution newsletters and press releases.

  • Provide support with social media sites.

  • Respond to questions from the public and community organizations.

  • Event planning; assist with department newsletter.

  • Create and update media talking points.

  • Post updates to the department's intranet.

  • Coordinate special projects and community outreach.

  • Create and update resource material.

  • Interact with other governmental and community-based organizations.

Best Fit:

  • Strong writing skills and familiarity with social media, newsletters, press releases, publications, and websites.

  • Ability to edit websites.

  • Student or recent graduate in Communication, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, Digital Communications, or related field.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have completed at least three years of college-level work in Communication, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or Digital Communications.

  • Possess moderate administrative and computer skills.

Communications & Engagement Department

The City of Irvine Communications & Engagement Department plays a crucial role in maintaining an effective flow of information between the City government and its residents, businesses, and visitors. This department is responsible for ensuring that the public is well-informed about city policies, initiatives, events, programs, and services. It manages various channels of communication, including the City's website, Inside Irvine, social media platforms, press releases, digital media, video, and more, to disseminate important information to the community. Additionally, the department engages with the public through community outreach programs and public relations efforts, seeking to foster a sense of community and facilitate feedback and participation from the Irvine community. The department is also home to the City’s International and Multicultural Affairs programs and Irvine Community Television.

The Process

Interview: After a thorough review of applications, those candidates deemed most qualified as reflected in their application will be invited to an interview. Candidates will be evaluated on current area of study, experience, interest in city government, and availability.

Background Check : A thorough background investigation will be conducted prior to appointment.

Candidates may also be required to take and pass a medical examination, including drug screening, to ensure their ability to perform assigned duties.
